History of the Committee When was the Berri
Barmera Local Action Planning Committee established? The Berri Barmera Local Action Planning area (see map) encompasses the Northern side of the River between the Lyrup Ferry and Lock 3,which in total, covers an area of 43,000 hectares and includes the townships of Cobdogla, Winkie, Glossop, Monash, Loveday, Overland Corner, Berri, Barmera and Gerard. The Berri Barmera LAP committee shares the same boundary as the Berri Barmera Council, and also falls within the River Murray Catchment Water Management Board boundary and the Murray Darling Basin in South Australia. The northern section of the LAP area also falls inside the boundary of the Eastern Districts Soil Board. Features of the area include:
Social and economic characteristics of the area With a population of 11,400 in the BBLAP there is a current negative growth rate of -0.7%. In 1996 the gross value of primary production in the Berri Barmera area was $69.9 million which represents 2% of the total South Australia total gross output. In 1995/96 the area produced vegetables valued at $4.7 million, with fruit production including grapes, valued at $63.6 million. Fruit production included 11,300 tonnes of oranges and 45,300 tonnes of grapes. Horticultural production
in the area supplies the export and domestic fresh fruit market and a
range of value-adding industries including wine and juice, manufacturing,
fruit packing and dried fruit processing. The manufacturing industry produces
over $200 million per year and employs 15% of the total Berri Barmera
