Berri Barmera Local Action Planning

Land and Water Management

floating flagsirrigationIn 2000, the BBLAP Committee released its Land & Water Management Plan for the Berri Barmera district, incorporating predominantly the Central Irrigation Trust's irrigation districts of Berri and Cobdogla.

The primary objective of this plan is to work towards all irrigators achieving 85% efficiency, something which is well on track. This has been achieved largely as a result of the suite of training courses, irrigation education programs (floating flags, scheduling trials etc) and irrigation assessments that have been offered through the Improving Irrigation Efficiency Project.

This project is a collaborative effort between the Local Action Planning Committees, Central Irrigation Trust, Renmark Irrigation Trust and the SA Murray Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board.

The other main recommendation out of the LWMP was to divert all irrigation drainage water from across the district to the Berri evaporation basin, and rehabilitate wetland drainage basins at Loveday and Cobdogla. To date, the large-scale funding that would be required to achieve this has not been available, given other priorities across the Murray Darling Basin. Some works have been undertaken at both Loveday and Cobdogla basins, which can be found in the Wetlands and Floodplains section of this website.
